Chapter I · The Practice

A small Nottingham practice, meticulous about software that endures.

2006
Year of Incorporation

Founded in the heart of Nottingham, we have spent nearly two decades translating complex problems into calm, legible systems — for engineers, analysts and administrators alike.

Our work sits where rigour meets restraint. We design computer systems that are fast to operate, slow to fail, and gentle to inherit.

Savoy Systems Ltd operates from 25 Broad Street, Nottingham — an unhurried workshop preferred by clients who value clarity over theatre. We are classified within Computer Systems Design and Related Services, with a parallel remit in Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services.

Every engagement begins with listening. Requirements are drafted carefully, interfaces modelled before they are built, and each delivery is documented as though a colleague will maintain it for a decade. Very often, they do.

Chapter II · Disciplines

The six disciplines of the practice.

Each engagement is framed under one of the following headings. We do not spread beyond them; depth serves our clients better than breadth.

i.

Computer Systems
Design

Architecting bespoke computer systems — from scoping and specification through to the careful composition of hardware, software and services into a coherent whole that a small team can operate confidently.

—>
ii.

Custom Programming

Writing purposeful software for operational, analytical and back-office work — favouring plain code, tested paths, and interfaces that respect the reader.

—>
iii.

Technical Advisory

Independent counsel on technology decisions — vendor selection, architectural review, and the quiet work of declining options that would not serve the client.

—>
iv.

Integration
Engineering

Joining disparate systems into reliable pipelines, without turning the enterprise into a labyrinth of bespoke glue.

—>
v.

Infrastructure

Small, well-kept environments — on-premise or cloud — with sensible monitoring and deliberately boring operations.

—>
vi.

Data Services

Modelling, migrating, and quietly caring for the data that keeps the business awake at night, until it no longer does.

—>
Chapter III · Approach

Four principles we do not negotiate.

I.

Clarity over cleverness

A system that a new engineer can read on their first morning is worth more than one that demonstrates the author's virtuosity.

II.

Documented by default

Decisions, trade-offs and operating procedures are written down at the time of making — never as an afterthought, never later.

III.

Small, honest releases

We ship modest, frequent changes. Large rewrites are treated with the suspicion they deserve.

IV.

Long relationships

We prefer clients we can grow with. Most of our work today comes from people we first met a decade ago.

Good computer systems, like good rooms, are planned carefully, finished quietly, and remain pleasant to work in long after the planners have left.
